Ennis Public Library has a summer reading program that pays prizes and cash

Ennis Public Library wants you to know that it pays to read — literally.

Ennis Public Library has a summer reading for 2022 program that has a grand prize of $150 for adults and various prizes for children and teens.

Fully underway and open to new participants, the program is open to children from pre-K on up to teens, and adults too. Children can take home prizes when they accumulate points for the total amount of time they read, and adults can enter a drawing for a $150 prize for every 500 pages that they read.

Reading progress for all participants is tracked through the READSquared app, which can be downloaded for Android or iOS.

Pre-K Summer Reading Program                                                                   

Kids ages 0-5 are encouraged to build a lifelong love for reading with this free program with no library card required.  Here is how to participate:

  1. Register on the READsquared app starting May 23rd.
  2. Beginning June 1, 2022, kids can read or have books read to them or listen to audiobooks and log their time in READsquared.  Each minute of reading earns one point.
  3. Each child can collect a badge and prize when he or she reaches 120, 240, and 360 points. 
  4. Every kid who completes the reading goal by July 15, 2022 may receive a certificate to be entered to win his or her choice of the grand prizes available.  Four winners will be randomly selected.
  5. Also, participating children can attend free presentations on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. The event calendar may be viewed on the READSquared app.

Library events for the pre-K group on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. are:

  • June 8, 2022: Ms. Maria Variety Show
  • June 15, 2022: Fire Trucks with the Ennis Fire Department
  • June 22, 2022: Bret Roberts Bubble Show
  • June 29, 2022: Boocoos Clown Show
  • July 6, 2022: The short film, The Gruffalo
  • July 13, 2022: Water Day – a splish-splash fun day outside

Children’s Summer Reading Program

The Kids’ Summer Reading Program is completely free and designed for ages 6-12; no library card necessary to participate. Participants may begin by downloading READsquared app.

  1. Children can read or listen to books, eBooks, and audiobooks and log their minutes in the app. Each minute of reading earns one point.
  2. Children can earn a prize each time they reach a reading milestone. Once they complete the reading goal by July 15, 2022, they may enter the drawing for a chance to win a grand prize. Four winners will be randomly selected

Children’s shows will also be presented on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. starting June 7, 2022. Coming up are:

  • June 7, 2022: Professor Branius Science Show
  • June 14, 2022: A Play of Swords Historical Hijinks
  • June 21, 2022: Carl Birk Storytelling
  • June 28, 2022: Creature Teacher — Animals
  • July 5, 2022: The movie, Luca
  • July 12, 2022: Maricella and Friends Puppets and Music

Teen’s Summer Reading Program

This program is designed for teens age 13 to 17 to encourage lifelong reading habits.     

Teens earn points are earned by logging their reading in with the READsqaured app. Bonus points can be earned by attending weekly events.

  1. Teens will read or listen to books, ebooks and audiobooks and log their pages in the READsquared app.  One point is earned for each page.
  2. Teens may collect a badge and prize when they reach 500, 1000, and 1,500 points.  
  3. When they complete the reading goal by July 15th, teens may receive a certificate. Everyone receiving a certificate of completion will be entered into the grand prize drawing.

Adult Summer Reading program

The adult summer reading program is for participants 18 years old and older. Everyone who participates will log their reading time in the READSquare app.

Everyone will receive a completion certificate for reading at least 5,000 pages. Every 500 pages that a participant reads will qualify his or her name to be entered into the grand prize drawing; one person will win $150.
